35-year-old accused of carrying knife, hatchet; threatening Sault Area Hospital staff

Sault Ste. Marie Police have charged 35-year-old Richard Mullen is facing multiple assault and weapons charges after responding to a call for service at Sault Area Hospital on Thursday.

Police say they responded to the hospital in the evening and the accused was holding a knife and hatchet and threatening staff while also allegedly damaging property at the facility.

Following is a full release from police on the incident:

On Feb. 3, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 35-year-old Richard Mullen with assault with a weapon.

In the evening hours, police were called to attend Sault Area Hospital as the accused was holding a knife and a hatchet, threatening staff and damaging property. Officers attended and the accused was arrested. No physical injuries were sustained during the incident.

He is charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon (x4)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2)
  • Uttering threats (x4)
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Intimidation – health care workers
  • Breach of probation – failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour (x2)

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
