One person has been handed impaired driving charges after a New Year's Eve traffic stop, the Ontario Provincial Police said.

At around 11:37 p.m., an officer reportedly witnessed a vehicle remain stopped at a green light on Great Northern Road.

The vehicle was pulled over and an investigation determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages.

Jesse Wiwchar, 33 years old, from Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Wiwchar has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 3. The accused's vehicle has been impounded for seven days and issued a 90 day administrative drivers license suspension.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Wiwchar is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
