Woman arrested for fraud

On the 22nd of December 2016 officers with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 30-year-old Carrie Maki at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre for a number of offences. 

It is alleged that, on the 16th of July 2016 the accused fraudulently obtained a credit card under the name of a person known to her.  On the 20th of July 2016 she [allegedly] obtained cheques from that fraudulent account and on two occasions, the 2nd of August and the 9th of September, she wrote cheques out to her name in the amount of $600 each time. 

In a separate incident on the 5th of August 2016 the accused [allegedly] broke into a downtown business and used a point of sale machine to obtain a $2,000 refund on the fraudulent credit card that she had obtained.  The accused also [allegedly] took cheques belonging to the business and is alleged to have written those cheques out in her name for various amounts of money.  The accused [allegedly] attempted to cash those cheques however was unsuccessful. 

On the 22nd of August 2016 the accused is alleged to have stolen a cellular phone belonging to a person known to her.  The accused obtained the victim’s banking information from that phone and [allegedly] used the victim’s bank account on the 26th of September to make a $2,000 payment on the fraudulently obtained credit card. 

Between the 19th and the 24th of November 2016 the accused is alleged to have written a total of 21 fraudulent cheques for various amounts of money from bank accounts in various names.

Carrie Maki was arrested by officers and has been charged with;

  • 12 counts of uttering a forged document,
  • 2 counts of fraud,
  • 1 count of false pretences,
  • 1 count of possession of stolen property,
  • 1 count of theft under $5000.00,
  • 1 count of break and enter, and;
  • 7 counts of breach of recognizance.

She will appear in bail court tomorrow.
