Are you interested in geocaching? Have you heard of Adventure Labs? Parks Canada, in collaboration with Adventure Labs and the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, has just launched the Sault Canal Adventure. This is a fun way for people of all ages to get active in the outdoors.

Geocaching is a digital treasure hunt game that can be played using a GPS on any mobile device. The Sault Canal Adventure is an adventure geocache that can be played using the Adventure Lab app. Players are guided through the process of finding locations, clues and then solving puzzles. By doing that, they complete an adventure one location at a time.

“We chose to create this adventure because we have existing geocaches on site. We have the Heritage Hide’n’Seek that we’ve been involved with for a number of years. We’re always looking to provide more fun opportunities for Canadians to learn about their heritage,” said Svenja Hansen, partnering and engagement officer for Parks Canada in Northern Ontario.

In contrast to other cache types, Adventure Lab Caches are completely virtual, so there is no need to collect items in containers.

It is location specific, so players would need to visit the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National HIstoric Site in order to play.

“We were looking for opportunities to provide visitors with virtual experiences. At this time where people are isolating or maintaining their distance from people outside of their family group, this is a safe activity to participate in,” Hansen said. “It’s a virtual tour of the Sault Canal and it shares great information about the site and its historical features.”

“The adventure is also available in both English and French,” Hansen added.

If you are craving entertaining outdoor activities to do within your bubble, then this may be just the thing for you. Parks Canada will virtually tour you around the Sault Canal for free, while solving fun puzzles. It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours, while discovering something new.

Players can get started by downloading the free Adventure Lab app and checking out the Sault Canal Adventure.
