HISTORY:
The Beech has been a workhorse serving both civilian and military needs. It quickly became one of the world’s most famous light twin-engine aircraft. CF-MJY was operated by Spartan Aero Service for aerial photography and surveying.
STORY:
On a flight from Winnipeg to Sioux Lookout, the passenger (Dr. Turgeon) noticed the pilot was studying two dials very carefully. Both needles were at zero, indicating no voltage in the planes electrical system, a failure likely due to a short circuit in the instrument panel. On their final approach the pilot pulled a lever to lower the landing gear. A reflex gesture only, as he didn’t expect it to function with no electrical system. Fortunately, such failures are anticipated so the pilot began to turn a lever that hand cranks the wheels into position. Shortly after touchdown, the landing gear collapsed. The plane lurched forward, nose much to far down and a sickening screech rose from the propellers as it scraped along the tarmac.
