After World War II the Chief was introduced. The plane was quite popular with over 1000 produced
between 1938 and 1946.
ACQUIRED FROM:
C-FNGV was salvaged on April 13, 1996 and brought to the CBHC. It was donated by the family of Monty Dawson and has been restored to display.

This aircraft was used for personal use.
HISTORY:
C-FNGV was Maker’s #189 and was built in 1947. It was purchased by Doug Kettles and imported to Sault Ste Marie from Kalamazoo, Michigan on January 22, 1961. It was eventually owed by Monty Dawson of the Soo. The Aeronca Chief (Model 11-CC) was constructed by the Aeronca Aircraft Company in Middletown, Ohio
STORY:
On Saturday, March 23, 1996, C-FNGV, piloted by Monty Dawson with passenger Frank Veltri, left on a one-day winter fishing trip to the Megisan Lake area north of Sault Ste Marie. The aircraft was reported missing on Saturday evening and after a search focused on the emergency locator, was discovered on Sunday morning. It appeared that the aircraft had broken through the thin ice on St. Mary’s River at Bell’s Point and had sunk in 3.7 metres of water. Both occupants drowned in the frigid water.
