Over a 5-year production period (1969-1974), only 13 ST-27s were produced – they were really a De Havilland Heron converted by Saunders Aircraft of Gimli, Manitoba. A small passenger aircraft suited for landing on gravel strips in the remote North, only one ever crashed. It was also known as an excellent glider – John Peacock recounts that Pilot Reg Kersey would regularly demonstrate the gliding capability of the ST-27 by feathering both engines at 10,000 feet 35 miles from Gimli and gliding to a landing. The CBHC’s Saunders was donated by Voyageur Airways and is reminiscent of classic passenger flight in the golden age of air travel.
