An early civilian plane, roughly 2,000 Aeronca Chiefs of varying models were produced between 1938-1950. The side-by-side seating configuration was the main difference between the Chief and the earlier Champ. This particular Chief was built in 1947 and eventually owned by Saultite Monty Dawson. The aircraft landed on thin ice March 23,1996 and sunk, drowning both the pilot and passenger. The aircraft was restored by volunteers at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre for display.
