George & Brenda Ireland: Ireland Craftsman Style Bungalow Dollhouse with Furniture

Craftsman Style - History and Features

The craftsman style of architecture and furniture emerged from the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century. The style emphasized the utility, comfort and use of natural materials (stained or dark-painted interior wood and stone), and generally muted colours inside and out. The style flourished between 1900 and 1929 with some updating in later periods. Craftsman style features straight horizontal, linear and 45-degree angles, especially with dormers, which appear in many examples. Furniture covering is often plain or striped, with chairs and sofas lacking ornamentation. Placement frequently reflects the above-noted angles of the style.

Ireland Craftsman Style Bungalow

For our dollhouse, we selected a deep blue with lavender undertones for the main body and used a muted golden brown and coral red for the trim. The inside and outside of the door are painted brown, allowing some grain to show through. For the interior, we used soft coral, muted yellow and horizontal striped accent wallpaper in soft colours. We also used a favourite interior Craftsman detail – the half or “pony wall” painted in a deep brown ad supported by columns intended as a separation between the living room and the kitchen area. As well, we used another favoured Craftsman interior detail – the built-in shelving surrounding the stone floor-to-ceiling fireplace and the pony wall base. We deviated somewhat with the staircase using a half-moon stair rail system reflecting the more exuberant Art Deco style which gained prominence in the 1930s and 1940s. This later style, still complimentary to its earlier cousin, is also referenced in the bedroom furniture and upper hall floral chair and ottoman.
