Nominations close, with two new city council candidates

Nominations for the 2022 local elections closed at 2 p.m. Friday with a handful of final-day surprises.

Johnathan Lalonde, a graduate of Algoma University's community economic and social development program currently employed at Missanabie Cree Business Corp., showed up during the last half hour and registered to run for Ward 1 councillor.

Gideon Down, an electrician at Algoma Steel, filed paperwork to run for city council in Ward 5. A graduate of Sault College's Electrical Engineering and Process Automation program, he later obtained his Master Electrician designation.

Susan Myers appeared to be headed for an acclamation as Ward 2 trustee at Algoma District School Board, but Michelle Murphy, who had registered Thursday to run for Ward 5 ADSB trustee, switched today to Ward 2, meaning Myers will now face a challenger. 

The 2022 local elections are on Oct. 24.

City clerk Rachel Tyczinski will release her official version of the candidates list on Monday.
