Whether you’re a seasoned RV traveller or you’re finally going to rent a trailer for the first time after years of dreaming about it, this is the summer to have an adventure you won’t soon forget.

In northern Ontario, the go-to source for RV rentals and repairs is Johnson’s RV and Auto. Village Media spoke with general manager Matt Hawdon about how to get a jump on summer and make sure you’ll have everything you need.

Johnson’s RV was in business for 25 years before Hawdon and his business partners took over in February of 2021. The current team consists of 2 full-time parts/service advisors, 3 full-time RV techs with an apprentice, and the GM and his son Noah who handle sales. (Hawdon also takes care of securing financing on all the trailers.) His wife will be joining the team this spring to help out with sales and other day-to-day items.

There have already been several updates since this change of ownership took place. “We have expanded our footprint in Sault Ste. Marie by 5 times with the purchase of the 17-acre lot next to us. This will provide us with a large and secure lot for year-round storage and for units to sit in while they’re here for service,” Hawdon explains. They also have satellite lots in Wawa, Marathon and Hearst.

The company has added lots of new and exciting RV brands, so customers have the largest selection to choose from. There is a trailer for everybody and multiple floor plans are available so you can choose just the right one, including off-grid models, park models, fifth wheel, tent trailers, small pop-up and easy-tow travel trailers. They also carry two full lines of cargos and utilities.

Hawdon worked in automotive sales as a manager for 12 years before making this transition. He has camped most of his life and has owned a few trailers. “Now I try to get out as much as time permits, but mostly in the late season,” he says.

“As someone who enjoys the outdoors—be it fishing, hunting or camping—this has been an easy adjustment because we are here selling the outdoor experience.”

The clientele at Johnson’s RV are equally split between return customers and folks who are new to the business and RVing. He loves the laid-back, no pressure sales the industry is known for.

Booking for summer 2024

The company has now entered the rental market as well. “We will be renting out six trailers this season,” says Hawdon. “It’s a great way to introduce the idea of camping or to get back into camping.”

If you’re looking to book a rental trailer for your summer holiday, he recommends coming up with a plan sooner rather than later. “We can help put together a plan if you are looking for ideas where to go. Then we would recommend booking as soon as possible to secure your trailer and make sure you get the one you want.”

They are now booking for the spring and summer seasons, with availability starting June 1st.

If you already own your own trailer, be sure to have a thorough inspection before you hit the road. Hawdon recommends having this done twice a year: in the spring and the fall. “At least one of those should be performed by your local dealer,” he suggests.

Johnson’s RV and Auto is the largest recreational vehicle dealership in northern Ontario. In addition to rentals, they have a wide range of inventory, offer financing and have a stocked parts department (orders come in weekly), and a reliable service facility. They perform all trailer maintenance, including tires and suspension.

“With the help of great staff and family members, you can expect more exciting things from Johnson’s RV and Auto,” says Hawdon. “Keeping you out there for a full season is the goal.”
