Michael Moore stumps Sault tonight with Tony

Following the all-candidates meeting in the Sault College Outback this afternoon, famed U.S. filmmaker Michael Moore hit the hustings with Sault riding NDP candidate Tony Martin.

The two spent about 90 minutes together doing some door-to-door canvassing.

Martin Releases fourth YouTube video on economy

SAULT STE. MARIE - Incumbent MP Tony Martin enlightened the prime minister today that “it’s good paying jobs, Stephen” needed for a tanking economy as New Democrats released its fourth YouTube video on its local economic priorities.

“His poll numbers are sliding downhill like the economy while this self-described, hard-headed man sprinkles small tax cuts and little comfort for our residents who are taking a beating on stock markets or struggling to get by,” Martin said.

Martin’s New Democrats are calling for major infrastructure investment, green collar jobs and a national retrofit program.

They will deliver the investment in jobs and people in a balanced budget by redirecting $50 billion in corporate tax cuts.

“Workers in Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma know what Harper pretends not to know. The economy has titled wildly in favour of the rich and their friends while a squeezed middle class trying to make ends meet.

“We need investment for our entire community - for our resource industries, for our seniors, for young families, for skills training, for job creation. These are the things that will keep our economy buoyant, not huge tax giveaways to profitable companies.

“It’s wrong that families here are putting in more work time yet four out of every five are getting a smaller share of the pie. It’s wrong that nearly 30 percent of Canadian families have no retirement savings. It’s wrong that almost half of Canadians say they are always just one or two missed pay cheques away from being poor.”

Martin said Conservatives are wrong to promise to send FedNor dollars to Southern Ontario communities instead of investing in Northern communities.

In Vancouver, New Democrat leader Jack Layton said Harper’s response to the crisis in the banking system is to say everything is fine, nothing needs to change and there are no problems.

“(Prime Minister) R.B. Bennett couldn’t have said it better himself in 1930 in the Great Depression.”
