Sault College students check out deer on St. Joseph Island
SAULT STE. MARIE - (November 4) - The Sault College Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies (NEOS) students will be operating the annual deer check station on St. Joseph Island.
The station will be held in the parking lot of Mom’s Restaurant and will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily from Saturday, November 7 to Saturday, November 14.
“This is yet another example of how Sault College students gain hands on training in their programs,” states Teri Winter, NEOS faculty and event organizer. “Students are able to contribute to local wildlife management as well as apply what they have learned in the field. It then allows them to share this knowledge with the rest of the community in a unique setting.”
Successful hunters can bring their deer to the station to be weighed and have the jaw aged.
Each hunter will receive a 2009 successful deer hunter crest for a jaw submission.
Monday, Tuesday and Saturday mornings between 8 and 10 a.m., hunters can bring in buck antlers for scoring.
There will additionally be a drop off box available for after hours jaw submissions at the station.
There will not be a jaw collection at Sault College this year, so hunters are encouraged to take advantage of the check station on St. Joseph Island.
The general public are encouraged to stop in and check the tally board, meet the students and find out more interesting facts about our local wildlife.
For further information please contact Teri Winter at (705) 759-2554 x.2462.
