A Goal in Mind
Last year, I decided to make the commitment to complete a semester on the House Building Project. The project is offered through White Pines for all Algoma district students together with the development partner SalDan. I think that this program will give me my best opportunity to secure an apprenticeship in the construction field. I am learning and experiencing the many trades involved in home construction and this includes gaining more skills with power tools!
I have previous experience with house framing through summer jobs but now I am more involved in reading blueprints and lay outs. Using calculations for cutting material is also important on this project. It's a very different way to learn, working with a team of students to maintain and be responsible for tools, trailers and a complete construction site.
This is a great way to spend the semester because we will be working with the tradespeople that SalDan employs. This will be my chance to connect with different construction businesses that sponsor apprentices. I will use this cooperative education experience to hopefully be signed through the Ontario Youth Apprentice program.
I plan to graduate from White Pines this June and be moving to the next step in my life as an apprentice. It would be great to stay in the Soo and begin a career as a skilled tradesperson in the construction field!
