Algoma U students scare away hunger this Halloween

Third Annual 'Trick or Eat' series of events build new community-university partnerships

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - (October 7) - In partnership with the Arts Council of SSM and District and the Sault Youth Association, the Algoma University Student Food Bank will host its third annual 'Trick or Eat' campaign.

This year these organizations are pleased to present a series of fun, creative events with the purpose of raising awareness of local food security and student poverty issues, by taking an innovative approach to the celebration of Halloween.

On Wednesday October 28, community members young and old will take to our downtown streets in the Soo Zombie Walk.

The event begins at the Grand Theatre at 4:30 p.m., where all are welcome to participate in face painting and other 'zombification' activities.

At 5:30 p.m., individuals dressed in full zombie garb, behaving in full zombie character, will depart from the Grand Theatre, traveling down East, Bay and Elgin Streets to return to the Grand Theatre for door prizes, refreshments and celebration at 6:30 p.m.

From there, participants will break off into groups and canvass central neighbourhoods for non-perishable food items to support the Algoma U Student Food Bank and Vincent's Place.

The frightening fun continues on Saturday October 31 with a second edition of Trick or Eat, beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. at the Speakeasy on the Algoma U campus.

Again, participants will travel door-to-door in full costume throughout the central-west neighbourhoods of Sault Ste. Marie to collect food for these local food banks.

The Trick or Eat series of events concludes Halloween night with a 'Funeral for Affordable Education' dance party hosted by the Algoma U Student's Union at the Speakeasy.

This celebration, focusing on student poverty due to exponential increases in the costs of post-secondary education, will include food, fun, prizes and music by DJ Damaging D.

Admission is $3 and doors open at 9:30 p.m.

Proceeds support the Algoma U Student Food Bank.

Community members are encouraged to have non-perishable food items available for 'trick or eaters' on Wednesday October 28 and Saturday October 31.

For those outside of the Trick or Eat and Zombie Walk Food Drive routes still wishing to contribute, monetary and food donations can be dropped off outside of the Speakeasy from 5 to 9 p.m. on Halloween night.

These events are open to the public.

Volunteers are needed.
