Soo Eagles seek to snap mini-slump with 2 games this week

Despite having gone 0-1-1 in a pair of Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League games last week, the Soo Eagles return to the ice this week still in good shape.

With 21 points from a record of 10-3-1, the Eagles are only two points out of first place in the NOJHL's West Division. And the Eagles hold two games in hand on the first-place Soo Thunderbirds, who have 23 points from an 11-4-1 record.

"It's a close-knit team and we know that if we work hard we'll get results," Eagles captain Jake Watchorn told RR Media Service.

Watchorn, whose 18 points have him tied for the Eagles scoring lead with Ryan McAleese, added that the Eagles hope to begin a turnaround from their mini slump when they travel to Manitoulin on Friday night before returning home to play the Sudbury Jr. Wolves on Saturday in a 7 p.m. start at the Pullar Stadium.

"It's not that we played bad last week, I just don't think we were as focused as we should have been," the 20-year old Watchorn said of a 6-2 loss at Manitoulin that was folowed by a 5-4 overtime deffeat to the Blind River Beavers.

"It's a matter of carrying out the game plan of Coach (Paul) Theriault and get back to playing our system," noted 20-year old defenceman Ryan Axsom, who has 13 points, including 12 assists, thus far this season.

"We're a good team but we have to work to get results," added Axsom.
