The Soo Thunder entered the weekend with a slim lead over the Sudbury Wolves in the Northern Ontario AAA Bantam League standings.When the weekend was done, it was the Wolves who held a one-point lead over the Thunder for top spot. The Wolves overtook the Thunder by winning two of three games over the weekend.
The Wolves opened the three-game set with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Thunder on Saturday afternoon. Nathan Hebert scored the lone goal for the Thunder.
Later in the day the Thunder managed to scratch out a 2-1 victory to restore their one-point lead in the standings. A second period goal by Tyler Brown, on a penalty shot, proved to be the winner. Michael Caruso also scored in the win.
On Sunday, the Wolves built up a 4-1 lead in the first period and held on for a 5-4 victory. Ryan Vendramin, Matthew Mitchell, Matthew Pinder and Jesse Rizzo scored for the Thunder in the loss.
The weekend proved to be a tough one overall for the Thunder as the team battled a flu bug in the days leading up to the three-game set.
The Thunder are back in action this weekend when they travel to Sudbury for the Big Nickel Tournament, which kicks off on Thursday.
