Hounds grab win over Kingston

The Soo Greyhounds may not have liked the start but they were satisfied with the finish.

After the Kingston Frontenacs controlled the first half of the game, the Hounds took over and skated to a 4-2 win on Sunday night at the Essar Centre.

James Livingston was a standout for the Greyhounds, scoring twice and setting up another.

"We had a real sloppy first period and came out with no energy," said Greyhounds head coach Denny Lambert. "We have a young team and we have played a lot of hockey in this stretch. You don't want to make excuses but it could be a factor."

Kingston jumped on the scoreboard first as Derek Froats' weak shot slid under Greyhound goaltender Robin Lehner 6:53 into the contest.

The Greyhounds seemed to find their jump after Kyle DeCoste tied the game 12:19 into the second period as he tipped a high centring pass from Brian Shaw.

Shaw left the game a short time later and was taken to the hospital after suffering a cut on his forearm from a skate blade.

Livingston notched his first of the night with 2:24 remaining in the frame when he tipped a centring pass through the five-hole of goaltender Tyler Beskorowany on the power play for a 2-1 lead.

Mitch Lebar evened the score 1:05 later as the Frontenac skated in and cleaned up a juicy rebound from Lehner.

With discipline becoming an issue for Kingston, the Hounds potted a pair of goals in the third period.

Livingston bagged his second of the night and 10th of the season 3:12 in as Vern Cooper fed over a pass off the faceoff deep in Kingston territory.

"James was really good. This might have been the best game I've seen him play," said Lambert.

Jordan Nolan, in his first game back from a 20-game suspension, capped the scoring on the power play at 11:36 on a tight angle shot from the goal line during a scramble in front of Beskorowany.

"(Nolan) started to skate in the second and third period and looked more comfortable as the game went on. We was a lot better in the third and did a good job," said Lambert.

With Nolan in the lineup and four overage players on the roster, T.J. Battani was a scratch.

Kingston outshot the Greyhounds 33-29.

"I thought we were good in the first two periods and in the third we had some mental lapses and at times did some stupid things. Against the Soo's skilled players you can't do that and we gave up some goals," said Kingston assistant coach Tony Cimellaro.

Frontenacs head coach Doug Gilmour, who left the arena immediately following the game for the team hotel, was said to be unpleased with the result and was unavailable for comment.

With a three-game homestand coming to an end, the Hounds sit with a 10-7-0-1 record for 21 points and a fifth place standing in the Ontario Hockey League's western conference.

The Hounds will now prepare for a three-game road trip that will see stops in Windsor on Thursday, Plymouth on Saturday and Saginaw on Sunday.
