Frontenacs and Don Cherry Salute Canadian Forces

The secret’s out! The Kingston Frontenacs are pleased to announce that since its home game on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009, a limited edition, one-of-a-kind, AUTOGRAPHED Don Cherry game sweater has gone on auction. All proceeds from the monies raised are to be donated to Soldier On Charity.

Soldier On fund works to optimize the functional independence of ill or injured Canadian Forces personnel or former personnel by delivering programs and services and facilitating and integrating opportunities that support their full and active participation in physical fitness, heath promotion and sport. The Canadian Forces is committed to ill and injured personal and their loved ones, through programs ranging from excellent medical care, to vocational assistance to social support and counseling.

On Wednesday, October 21st, 2009, against the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, the Kingston Frontenacs honoured Canadian Forces Base Kingston in their annual salute to the military and were joined this season by Hockey Night in Canada star Don Cherry. On that night, the Kingston Frontenacs unveiled and wore a limited edition, one-of-a-kind Don Cherry game sweater. Each Don Cherry sweater was autographed by the Canadian hockey legend and have been made available for sale in an on-line auction, all proceeds from the monies raised to be donated to Soldier On.

“When we contacted Don Cherry initially to see if he would be interested in taking part in our salute, he immediately came on board as we all know what a tremendous supporter of the Canadian military he is,” said Director of Business and Community Development Michelle Skolnick.

Joining the evening was Warrant Officer Andrew McLean, a Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technician and ultra-marathon runner who started Soldier On.

“I think that not only Kingstonians, but Canadian hockey fans in general are going to be in for a big surprise with the look of our Don Cherry sweaters" said Jeff Stilwell, Director of Marketing, Public, Media and Player Relations.

The Majors got the best of the Fronts on Wednesday night by a score of 4-3.

Frontenacs' rookie Alan Quine tallied an assist on the night for his ninth point of the season. Quine was selected in the first round, second overall, in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection and is featured in video this week on www.ontariohockeyleague.com discussing life as a rookie in the OHL with his expectations for the 2009-10 season.
