MAGAZINE

Local magazine nets four awards in international competition

Lake Superior Magazine flew home from New Mexico with two silver and two bronze awards from the annual International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) conference held this year in Santa Fe.

In IRMA, Lake Superior Magazine competes with larger, top-quality publications like Arizona Highways, Oklahoma Today, Cottage Life and a range of other regional magazines primarily from the United States and Canada.

“It’s extremely exciting to receive recognition in the company of such great magazines,” says Lake Superior Magazine Editor Konnie LeMay. “The quality of our freelance writers really shines through for us. It’s a great way to wrap up our 30th year celebrations.”

The awards the magazine received:

- Silver for Best Reader Service Article “Wintertime and the Livin’ is Freezy,” a story about how to prepare your body for northern winters by Duluth writer Ann Treacy in the December/January 2008 issue

- Silver for Best Environmental Feature “The Swinging Pendulum” a story about the 50th anniversary of the wolf-moose study on Isle Royale by Minnesota writer Andrew Sorenson in the February/March 2008 issue

- Bronze for “Best Culture Feature Much More Than Just a Hat,” the story of Stormy Kromer hats by Bayfield, Wisconsin, area writer Jared Glovsky in the April/May 2008 issue

- Bronze for Best Travel Feature “The Two Saults: Unlocking the Not-So-Secret Favorites,” an insider’s tour of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario, by local writer Tom Pink in the June/July 2008 issue.

In critiquing Ann Treacy’s story, judges called it “an utterly charming piece presented with a great deal of humor that appears to be ideally geared to the readership,” adding that it gave “excellent advice in a homespun yet informative style.”

More judges’ comments on the other stories can be seen on the magazine’s website.
