Three youths charged in stolen car
SERPENT RIVER, ON – On June 30, 2009 around 3:10 a.m., an officer from the East Algoma OPP Blind River detachment was conducting stationary radar on Highway 17 in the Serpent River area when a westbound car caught his attention.
Using the radar, the officer obtained a reading of 155 km/h in the 90 km/h zone.
The officer caught up to the Ford Contour and pulled it over around the intersection of Highways 108 and 17.
The driver, a 15-year-old male from Elliot Lake, exited the vehicle and admitted to the officer that he had stolen the car and failed to pay for gas in the Espanola area.
The driver along with his two passengers (a 14-year-old male from Elliot Lake and a 13-year-old male from North York) were arrested and taken into custody.
As a result of the police investigation the following charges have been laid against the driver:
- Impaired operation Section 253(a) Criminal Code.
- Being over 80 milligrams Section 253(b) Criminal Code.
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000 section 354(1)(a) Criminal Code.
- Stunt driving section 172(1) Highway Traffic Act.
The two passengers have been charged with:
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000 Criminal Code.
- Theft under $5,000 section 334 Criminal Code.
The three youths, who can not be identified according to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were released to their parents with a court date August 17 in Blind River Youth Court.

Local business victim of break and enter
BLIND RIVER, ON – Another Blind River business has become a victim of break and enter.
Sometime overnight on June 30, unknown person(s) attended Cottage Country on Woodward Avenue in Blind River.
Entry was gained and undisclosed items were taken.
Police are looking for anyone with information that can assist them in solving this break and enter or any other crime.
