ReportAnnie - Not ordinarily a groupie but I lined up for an hour and a half with all the other adoring fans to have my book autographed and to thank her for years of inspirational music. A proud member of Annie's army - Take that all you Kiss fans! There's talent than there's theatre! Apples and oranges.

Reportits simple, don't post photos you do not want people to see, and if you do post photos do not set the album so that anyone can see it except for your Facebook friends. That being said, kinda fishy that they would make a medical decison based on the photos, if she was claiming she couldn't walk and they had pics of her walking that would be different, but i guess the lesson is, if you are diagnosed with depression, DO NOT SMILE for the camera...

ReportNot a word on the appointments of the first permanent President of the European Council and the first High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy?
I presumed BBB would already have posted on the subject.

Report Sam C., 4Th., or anybody: Need help to settle an argument people.
How old is our Canadian Tire Store? I said 30 years? And when it was on Queen Street it was across from the Woolco Eh?
Astérix 11/20/2009 10:37:50 AM
Reportold-cat33,
Sam C is liable to tell you the Canadian Tire opened the same year the NHL expanded to 8 teams. My advice is to wait on others more sound of memory.

ReportI feel surprised but honoured that anyone should be interested in my opinion on things European, particularly things French, above all since the day when one poster (whose crappy posts usually don’t impress me much by their style or their content) took it upon herself to decree in place of the editors of this site that “we” aren’t interested. Be that as it may, as I interpret the comments of the Continental media in general, Tony Blair could have been the favourite for the job, but he had two counts against him, namely his involvement in Dubya’s Iraqi war and the fact that his country did not adopt the Euro as a currency. The Belgian winner is generally considered to be a respected, capable enough gentleman, but without the international renown, charisma and “pizzazz” of a Tony Blair. Europe as an entity will not therefore be likely to pack as much punch in the international arena as many European leaders had envisaged for the job. Leo Durocher once commented that “Nice guys finish last.” I personally hope for the sake of Europe and the world in general that Mr. Van Rompuy will prove, as once suggested by Vince Lombardi, that “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” As for the Socialist British Baroness who will be Europe’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, most commentators seem to believe that only God, and perhaps the Devil, know what to expect.

Astérix 11/20/2009 11:21:17 AM
ReportBBB,
If the moderators were to forbid the posting of uninteresting material on this site, there would be many fewer comments--and columns!
Why limit yourself to interpreting Continental media? You must have an opinion all your own.
Van Rompuy's advent is attributable to three factors:
1/He has promised to keep his opinions to himself. Once Reinfeldt characterised the position as "chairmanic", Van Rompuy's odds shortened markedly.
2/He is colourless. With Merkel and Sarkozy comfortable in their seats of power, a competitor for the limelight would not do.
3/He is from a small state subscribing to all Union policies. This was necessary but, as the case of Sarkozy's dismissal of Juncker proved, not sufficient.
Ashton benefited from party affiliation, a good personal relationship with Barroso, and her gender.
In the end, the Franco-German relationship prevailed. A pliable Belgian sits in the President's chair and the UK Commissioner is as far from an economic post as could be hoped.
And thus will Michel Barnier become Commissioner for the Internal Market and Financial Services in Barroso II, and Axel Weber President of the European Central Bank in 2011. My guess at Italian compensation for D'Alema's exclusion from the HR post is Tremonti as chair of the Eurogroup.

Unlike many newcomers to Canada immediately after they land there or step off the boat, I believe that, as an outsider, the only opinions about the running of the European Union which count are those of the Europeans themselves. I did at least express my hopes for Europe, and for the world, arising from last night’s election. As for your own perceptive analysis of the backroom infighting and the reasons motivating it, I tend to agree in general with your comments, have no personal knowledge or grounds for refuting any of them and could therefore easily believe in their possible accuracy.

ReportNow there is a guy you don't mind seeing win the lottery. He will probably quit working shortly when it kicks in that he is taking a job from someone else but God bless him anyway..If I ever win that I will put several people out of work and open up some new jobs for those that want them..LOL :)

ReportCan you believe the conservative gov't! Most of the bigwigs went to university and they must have taken a master class in lying. The 2nd in command in the embassy in Afghanistan testifies to the torture of afghan prisoners turned over by canada to afghan prisons and his political masters essentially accuse him of lying about it. I hope the truth comes out because if it's true our troops in afghanistan are even in more danger. When canadian troops are caught by the taliban their fate will be the same as the afghans who were tortured and our gov't won't have a leg to stand on if they protest.

ReportElgin and Bay was Simpson-Sears -- where Fabricland is now.
Across the street was Cochrane-Dunlop Hardware -- that building was torn down and replaced with the current 3-storey office building.
CTC was across from Woolco. The service bays were in the back, off King Street.
Pilgrim and Queen was the Firestone dealer.
Astérix... you did read where I acknowledged that I was wrong? Thanks.
Oldie Goldie 11/20/2009 5:35:49 PM

Oldie Goldie 11/20/2009 5:38:01 PM
ReportThe present Post Office was built on land that was used for a Community Horseshoe Pitch.
Just Curious 11/20/2009 5:44:30 PM
ReportSam; Elgin and Bay is only a parking lot for Fabricland, don't remember what was there before. I remember coming into the CTC on Queen in the 70's when I was doing service work in the north... Nobody has yet said when CTC moved to the Cambrian location. Gonna have to call them to find out for sure, I guess..
Just Curious 11/20/2009 5:48:25 PM
ReportP.S.; Never knew until yesterday that there used to be a Woolworths in the Churchill Plaza.. A friend of mine used to work there,(child labour,I'm sure,,):)
Sam C 11/20/2009 6:15:03 PM
ReportSorry, I meant Elgin & Queen.
As for when Canadian Tire moved, I believe it was around 1980-81. It was there BEFORE the Cambrian Mall was built, which was 1983-84. If memory serves, the CTC store was expanded at the same time as the mall was built and connected to it.
Prior to the Mall, the Sentry store and Loblaws were located across from Vernes (prior to it relocating to the former SuperJet Car Wash) roughly where the CIBC and Winners are now, and Prouse Motors was right out front, on Gt Northern Rd.
(That was Prouse's second location, the first being where WorkWear is now, on Queen near Tancred.)

ReportSam, I believe Simpson's was directly across the street from Fabricland on the corner of Bay and Elgin before it became Simpson Sears....

Crabs 11/20/2009 6:49:06 PM
ReportBoo hoo hoo. Some douchebags cryin' about being tortured. They will say anything to get sympathy. Fall into their clutches and watch the fun.
statusquo 11/20/2009 7:25:10 PM
ReportFirst off crabs,
"Douchebag" is MY word. I have the copyright to it! If you want to use it, you owe me royalties. (you can pay by phone...we take plastic).
Now....torture is just plain wrong. On any and all levels. It is not what civilized human beings do to each other.
If we condone it or engage in it we have lost any moral footing. We are not any better than them.
Worse yet, think of the kind of human being that willingly engages in torturing another? What sick pathology must have been ignited in his psyche to
enable him to do that?
I am repulsed by it!
Where would it end? Would it be ok to gas children that have the potential to become suicide bombers? Are we that weak ? If we have to resort to these tactics we have lost on a moral and ethical basis.
It is not a political affiliation issue, it's an issue about common decency and what it means to be human.
wife 11/20/2009 7:32:37 PM
ReportCathy
First things first, the Canadians were ordered to turn all detainees over to the Afghans.
Second
The accusation of torture is all here say, and not proven. Why would you consider believing the Taliban? Did this Guy who accuses Canadians see the victims of torture? Even if it were true what could our Government do?
Third
Would you like to bring these detainees to Canada for incarseration so we could house, feed and clothe them.
Would you like to spend your hard earned tax dollars to build prisons in Afghanistan and have our Military Personal run them?
Why would you stand up for detainees that bomb, kill and mutilate our Service Personal every day. The same People throw acid in the face of young Girls just because they went to school.
I think maybe you did not give much thought to what is going on over there.
Millzeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 11/20/2009 7:40:19 PM
ReportCathyh... I'm suppose to have mercy for Taliban insurgents who where supposedly tortured by the Afghan Army after being transferred from Canadians. Are you *E@!ing for real? These *!@)ing scumbags use children as human shields. They Kill civilians for supporting the coalition. They use suicide bombers on they're own people. You are a woman, right? You have heard how women were treated when the Taliban were in power? Trust me, before any of this crap came out about torture, anyone with half a brain knew/knows the fate of our soldiers if captured.
debo 11/20/2009 7:42:11 PM
ReportStill the same CR@@p passed of as rebuttal...
WENIP where in her post does Cahtyh (your spelling) make any claim about WHO sent our troops to Afghanistan?
She brings up legitimate concerns about the welfare of our servicemen and women if captured (if the allegations are true).
She also raises the question of who in our government knew about these alleged events...and it could stretch back to the Liberal government. The implications of government acquiescence to torture are very troubling.
I am not a bleeding heart as regards the well-being of our troops in Afghanistan. The Taliban and any of their allies appear to be very brutal...and our forces should use maximum/over-powering force to defeat them on the battle-field. If that means very few survivors on their side...c'est la guerre. Once the battle is over....I think torture (if it occurred and a blind-eye turned to it) will be detrimental to the capability of our forces eventually.
In any case, you want to argue her point...argue the POINT. You want red-herring....GO FISH!

Sam C 11/20/2009 8:35:48 PM
ReportUpon further reflection, it occurs to me that the CTC store relocated to McNabb Street in the late 70s... perhaps 1976-77 or so. It could be that the Cambrian Mall may have been built around 1980-82.
