VOTE! VOTE! VOTE! A Youth Community Centre is a fantastic idea and needs to be done for our local youth! Where better than the YMCA...we build strong kids, strong families and strong communities! Why not add STRONG YOUTH to our list!
Martin Wyant,Executive Director of the YMCA is encouraging all of us to get on board.

Go to avivacommunityfund.org now.

On behalf of our youth....Thanks.

I enjoyed some of the federal Tories' apologists yesterday.
The economy is circling the toilet and it appears that the majority of us want our troops out of Afghanistan.
So what does the government and its fans do?Create a crisis on the vote over the Gun Registry.
Tried and true PC tactic. Remember Harris/Snoblen creating a crisis in education? Same philosophy, different stage.
In the meantime I'm beginning to think that Tony Martin could find a cure for H1N1 and a route to end poverty and he'd still be skewered by the right.
Of course he personally responded to those who disagreed because he voted on his conscience.Apparently that doesn't matter to some.
How that could be spun off into he is a puppet for Jack Layton is a stretch. One can only guess that the Tories can't comprehend the concept of conscience.
Somehow they seem to think that the political arena has its own set of mores.
Unfortunate.
But understandable.

Remember to vote at the Aviva Community Fund for the Soo Youth Centre at the Y.

It costs you nothing and would be a very helpful gift.

Flyhawk
That doesn’t fly…
"It appears the majority"of us are no longer happy with Tony Martin, yet he keeps getting into office. If conscience had anything to do with his voting, why is he in the NDP? Part of the NDP mandate is to legalize and tax prostitution. Why be a politician in the first place????
I mean really, you are going after the Tories for trying to create a crisis? Smoke and mirrors in politics???? NOOOOOOOO!!!!
Ignatieff has been trying to stir a crisis in his favor since he was placed (not voted) into the Liberal Leadership chair. He’s even called on Dion to see if he could make any of his ideas work with a new face. The problem is the new face doesn’t look like Barack Obama and the new face can’t find a “feel good” issue for Canadians. If he could, there would already be an election called.
The left is busy with 2 little problems of their own....One is called Jack and the other Mike. If they could just figure out how to spin that in their favor they would be laughing.

rw,

As promised I watched the link to youtube you provided yesterday.

I honestly do not know what to say. Well, I do but we've been getting along lately so I won't.

But I do know that whenever I see science intermingling with religion it degenerates into alchemy. There is a polluting substance in religion and it carries an offensive odour.

Nice video though, but a tad hokey for my taste. Maybe it would have helped if I'd hang some crystalls and burned some incense sticks, but I don't keep these items handy in my pantry.
Any time someone presents Jesus's turning water into wine as fact, I am outta there.
I'd rather discuss the link between the H1N1 vaccine and Donald Rumsfeld's stock options in the company.

Any takers?
statusquo 11/7/2009 9:27:30 AM Report

"Part of the NDP mandate is to legalize and tax prostitution."

And that is a bad thing?

The government already taxes tobacco and alcohol and profits from gambling. Why stop there?
Unkle Kracker 11/7/2009 9:40:19 AM Report

Yup, it is 16.
Mr. Sevens 11/7/2009 9:41:24 AM Report

SQ

The issue isn't that the NDP wants to pass this mandate. The issue is that Tony Martin is announcing that he is voting his conscience on the long gun registry, yet there is no conscience involved in running for a party that has such a mandate.

A youth center had operated in this city before and failed to sustain itself so what would make this proposal from the YMCA any different. I would not support this proposal without looking at the long term plan set out by the YMCA.

Maybe the 'youth" should be asked if they want a centre..AGAIN?

Right wing, I too watched the videos you suggested yesterday and found them very interesting. Who would have known there was such involvement in a seemingly simple thing as water? Thanks for the suggestion.

skipper dave 11/7/2009 10:42:17 AM Report

YOUTH CENTER - Ain't going to work! Great idea but sadly she won't fly.
Drive by our playgrounds! There empty. Children are hustled into the car and off to piano, hockey, soccer or sit in front of the TV playing virtual games on the keyboard while their parents numb out watching reality shows! We don't trust the world outside our doors to not molest, kidnap, bully or visit some serious mayhem or injury (falling off Thomas the train) on our offspring. They consequently will not learn to play together, to interact as humans. We have stolen that from them all in the name of fear. Any bets you build it (teen center) and no-one comes! Unless of course if you feed them the same crap we feed them now. Provide computers so they can isolate in their own fantasy world. Parents, how many of us remember being thrown out of the house after breakfast and being told not to come home till supper or a dire emergency such as a sucking chest wound that may have to be attended to. There was a reason, there were lessons to be learned! Drive by the playgrounds and ask yourself where are the kids?

I watched it as well....interesting way of polluting sceince with fiction or fact with religion....however you look at it...
Big Bad Bob 11/7/2009 10:59:04 AM Report

If "Tony Martin could find.....a route to end poverty... he'd still be skewered by the right.”
The Communist/Socialist answer to poverty is not to end it but to bleed all those who are financially successful - no matter how honestly or otherwise they got there - until everyone is equally down and out. Meanwhile, the Party bosses and their obsequious stooges will of course have their official limousines and all the other perks.
Or, as Sir Winston Churchill so aptly put it:
“The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”
4thcoming 11/7/2009 11:17:02 AM Report

unforntunatly that was never the desired result or the intial intent of Communism/Socialism, however it was always the intent of capitalism to make money and create power off the backs of those who had not the means to rise above oppression and in effect became slaves to the capitalist money mongers. As they convienced the masses that capitalism is good....everything else is bad (kind of like the role of the pope)
right wing 11/7/2009 12:03:42 PM Report

statusquo,

Good for you for watching.
As somebody that works in the field of water chemistry I can assure you that the bulk of that video series is pure science.
Did you happen to notice that the researchers are experts in their fields with PHD's, not just some back yard "mechanics"?
Interesting how the only thing you commented on was the relatively small amount of "religious" angles.
I suppose you are going to tell me that you were not surprised by the scientific research that proves that water is much more than what it seems to the average person.
My point in having you watch this is exactly that fact.
Things are much more then they seem, until we look closer, remove the blinders and open our eyes and minds.
You attest to believe that you know without a doubt..are absolutely convinced that there is no higher power than us...yet when you drink something seemingly as simple as a glass of water, it gives you life and is so much more than it appears.
You are an intelligent person, of that I have no doubt. I can make that assumption just based on your level of humor.
Yet when it comes to the possibility that there may be an "artist" behind the creation of your individual "canvas" you close your mind, completely, refusing to recognize that there just might be a "painter".
You are convinced!
After all you're really "just" a large glass of water, right!

I have shown this video (I have the full length CD) to many people.
They are always amazed at how something that we really take for granted is so much more than it appears.
Is that not the case each time we unlock another mystery of human life and the life of our planet.
Glad you enjoyed it, I knew you would.

:)
right wing 11/7/2009 12:55:59 PM Report

"Any time someone presents Jesus's turning water into wine as fact, I am outta there."

This was not presented as "fact" statusquo, but merely a possibility given the scientific observations of waters structure and how it can and does change its molecular structure under certain influence.
Crabs 11/7/2009 2:13:56 PM Report

Flyhawk: next time there is a vote on the budget that brings some relief to farmers or the downtrodden we'll see if Tony votes his so-called "conscience" or toes the Party line. I almost guarantee that he will do like all good toadies and do what he is told.

rw,

"Did you happen to notice that the researchers are experts in their fields with PHD's, not just some back yard "mechanics"?"

Just got back in the house after finishing a brake job in my driveway with pads from Walmart and removing the "Check Engine" light bulb in a "98 Neon with a dream catcher strapped to the rear view mirror.......

Now. Don't you get all huffy on me now. I merely stated that the video was a tad hokey. I liked it...very informative in parts.Lots of stuff I did not know.

However....when trying to make a scientific point one should leave out dubious characters such as Jesus, Mohammad and especially Mother Theresa....nothing saintly about that broad.

C'mon rw....the molecular structure of water changing shape by mere thoughts???? Seriously. Don't tell me you actually bought a Shamwow.

Just Curious 11/7/2009 2:59:07 PM Report

Skipper, I totally agree. Your comments bring back a lot of old memories. At my house it was "find something to do or I will find you something to do" and trust me it was much better to find your own stuff to do. Kids today just have no concept of how to do things on there own and it is scary to think of them running the parade in a few years. They need to get started using the facilities that already exist( like the mind) instead of having more crap built and handed to them...
flyhawk25 11/7/2009 3:18:30 PM Report

The next time you stop to let kids get off a school bus take a look.
They either have head-sets or - the older ones- cell phones.
The level of 'roundness' is staggering.I understand the little kids needing to ride, but whatever happened to walking to high school?
This isn't a big city where they're running a gang gauntlet...

Went shoe shopping with my 15 year old daughter this afternoon. We exchanged a total of three complete sentences..."you like these?"....."Is your toe ok?"....."Visa or debit?"...

statusquo 11/7/2009 4:54:29 PM Report

Well Big Brother,

Where do I start. Tune up? Not needed after 1996 model year. ( OBD2). Read, manufacturer recommended service intervals...unless you're unfortunate enough to own a Ford product with a 5.4 lt engine whereby a simple spark plug replacement can cost you thousands of dollars. "At Ford...Quality is Job one"..yeah...sure.....

Dream catchers in Neons you will need. Worst car EVER! A piece of shit that leaked oil in the show room.

Mother Theresa another piece of ___ that somehow is a saint! The Dodge Neon version of humanity. Don't get me going on that piece of work.

The five people you meet in heaven? How "aboot "Hell:?

The Shamwow is actually living up to its expectations. I know. I spill stuff !

BIG BROTHER 11/7/2009 5:17:11 PM Report

SQ,
Not to blow too much wind up your kilt, but your daughter will appreciate you more as she matures, cause she probably doesn't see you as the traditional 'Dad'...and that is a good thing...

Personally, I catch myself belly laughing at your wit, such as ...'that piece of crap was leaking oil on the showroom floor'...

I had a 92 Ford Explorer with the 5.4 liter engine, but I never went through the plug change thing in the 9 years I drove it. Now, the alternator was on a 2 year schedule, though. It also burned oil, but that could be expected with 280,000 kliks...

I must have been your service provider.
We're really good at what we're doing.
Just don't show up with a Walmart oil change sticker! You'll leave crying.

BTW. Explorers never had a 5.4.

Mission to Venis, Just Curious... when I read that article, I read a whole lot more than just ONE name.

"Hell has any other commercial operation along Queen been canvassed for these funds..OR do people in the "know" have that special access only?"

I would guess that business owners might have heard about this through the Downtown Association and the EDC.

And what's wrong with this? People have been whinging about the state of the downtown area for years, even dacades! Now something is being done.
MissionToVenis41 11/7/2009 6:25:32 PM Report

SamC

I for one agree Something is being done.
But with taxpayer money! It's the process that concerns me more.

By the way...wheres the other 20+ businesses? I see no mention of them in the Star. Why do you suppose that is?

Just Curious 11/7/2009 6:45:22 PM Report

Mission;O contrare,The Berto name is right there with the rest for the handout. It's in the paper. I do agree with some of it but some of those old buildings would be better gone...
flyhawk25 11/7/2009 6:52:44 PM Report

Mission...good point.
My sense is that we probably don't know the process - not because of some sneaky intent - but probably for the same reason we did not know about a lot of other things.
Until the press asked the right questions.
All of the clarity is a good thing. After all it is our money.
Goodness knows we have our money spent on a wack of stuff without any clarity at all levels of government.
It seems to me that a free press -in all of its forms- is inherent to making a democracy work.
A case in point.
The tree removal on Queen Street. It was parsed and diced by many of us.As it turned out from my perspective it all made sense and it became a non issue.
I quite like the idea that someone in the media is watching what might impact on us. In this case it was a trivial point, but I like the fact that we are given the information and then get an answer from the parties involved.
The Bad Guys don't want the rest of us to know what is being done.
The Good Guys explain what is happening and off we go.
Pretty nice microcosmic example of freedom.
And democracy.

Sam C 11/7/2009 8:26:22 PM Report

Mission... I don't understand what you are saying? What "other 20+ businesses" are you talking about?

And what's wrong with "taxpayer money?" Plenty of successful businesses avail themselves of government subsidies, grants, loans, and tax incentives. I just don't see the big deal?

Why is it that, for some people, the government "needs to do something," while for others when the government DOES do something, it's wrong?
prodigal son 11/7/2009 9:53:57 PM Report

"My sense is that we probably don't know the process - not because of some sneaky intent - but probably for the same reason we did not know about a lot of other things." And yet, when Orazietti tells how provincial dollars are being spent in the north he's known as "photo-op" Dave. We say we want to know how our money's being spent, but when we're told, we accuse the teller of grandstanding. In today's society it's more and more apparent that you just can't win.
