Way to go John! - Johnny the Valeonator. Don't stop John, start a ground swell that will gather momentum. I don't care what your motives are, this feels right. Never been a big fan but you pull this off and you can have my first born. Now if only you will have the maturity to cross political boundaries. Folks make no mistake that what's happening down the road east of us is a foreshadowing of what will happen here in our town with essar negotiation's set for next summer!
DutchTouch 11/3/2009 4:51:44 AM Report

Did anyone else happen to notice a man pushing a cart with a big yellow dog walking beside him yesterday? I met him a I was leaving the Hwy. 17 Trading Post on hwy. 17 east. At the time he was standing beside his cart having a drink. It was a grey day and sprinkling lightly. I met them again along the opposite side of the highway as I was coming home. They've been on my mind a lot since then and I wish I had the courage to stop and talk to him and perhaps offered some money.

Our lives are so busy and we are so conditioned to shy away from strangers we meet on the streets.

Even injured wild animals we find and aren't sure of what to do with but my heart goes out to them all. It's nights like this when I can't sleep that these memories come flooding in and I feel guilty and helpless. It makes me feel only half alive because I couldn't or didn't take the time to help my fellow humans or animals.

Anyway I wish this stranger and his dog all the best and hope they get to their destination safely.

Dutchy...I saw the man as well and then met him at a local restaurant. He and his dog are walking across Canada to increase awareness for the homeless. He has walked from Vancouver where he built shelters for them.Notice how neatly all of his belongings were folded away?
A very nice man with no apparent hidden agenda.

Retreaded... while I know a bunch of young wannabe beginning drivers who also wish to see the DriveTest centre re-open, this is NOT a local issue -- they are on strike province-wide.

Also, I daresay the economic impact of their disruption is fairly insignificant, as compared to the effect the Vale-Inco strike.

Mayor Roswell's Input

Catch a flight to Brazil and preach to the corporate heads there. Sending a letter to Vale/Inco in Sudbury will do little if anything. Sadly labour union strength in North America is on a decline. Every union from Auto manufacturing to mining etc are shedding costs. The Good times are over. Its a world economy and Vale/Inco is under pressure to reduce labour costs. Now who's next up to bat next... Essar Algoma?? ;-)) Waite and see...The Mayor is only getting started. I think its all in vain! But Goodluck!

Thanks for your responses right wing and Flyhawk. It's good to know that this person and his dog are being noticed. I had only a quick glimpse of them but noticed immediately there was something special about them. All too often the poor and homeless are tucked away in a corner of our minds. I really do wish now that I had taken a few minutes to give them support in some way. These people all have a story to tell and need a hand up from time to time. May they have a good journey.

DaPratt doesn't understand how to negotiate. Wait until next year.
KiwiOnASticK 11/3/2009 12:18:36 PM Report

I support our mayor's letter. He may not have the best "soft skills". But his simple message of Get Back to the Table so that people can Get Back to Work makes sense in it's simplicity.

Strikes benefit no one. Employees lose wages, companies lose productivity and communities are torn apart as friends become enemies, based on the colour hat that they wear. After the strike, the damage doesn't go away. It takes years to recover the losses. And some friendships are never resolved.

Let's hope that both sides stop pointing fingers and start talking soon.
Wicket 11/3/2009 12:45:06 PM Report

As is par for the course, DaPrat has opened his mouth and stuck his foot in it. I feel for the union members next year when their negotiations will take front and centre stage...with DaPrat doing the 'talking'.

Up in Smoke

So let me get this right? A property owner is not allowed to alter his property without the willing permission of a city permit or neighbours, who happen to live 3 blocks away?? Weird, so what’s next “honey we need new siding.” Well dear draw up a colour scheme and we will mail out in a survey to the neighbourhood to get approval for colours or it’ll cost 300.oo in city permits”
Perhaps the new Pita Pit location should grow and display a garden featuring “special” plants to quiet the tinybubble lady. Or wait, I have an idea! Why doesn’t the tinybubble lady put her petitioning skills towards approving a “weed” plantation right down Queen Street and we can have “love ins” right on the sidewalk every lunch hour! I could just see it…..”you goin’ to work man?” “nah,I’m hungry…..man” “well don’t go to that Pita place man….they kill trees man….” “ I know man, but have you seen their garden man?” “yeah man…..let’s go”

The city needs to “weed” out Municipal Government reaching into our pockets for everything and anything. Why would we want to be like the Big “smoke” down highway 400? We should just “roll up” this hair brained petition and …..well you get the idea…..
Gotta go I got the munchies……man!

A couple of thoughts for today:

Mr. Deprat - You speak of the 'union brotherhood'....Where was the brotherhood when Essar proposed a reduced work week rather than laying people off? BS, it's every 'brother' for himself, and rightly so his family.

Pita Pit: I like nice mature trees like anybody else, but these trees were 'over mature'. would those that signed the petition be willing to stand under those trees last Friday night...think of the liabily....Maybe those that signed the petition should contact insurance adjusters to find out how much damage was done to cottages on Batchewana Fri. night?

DaPrat is so concerned about the Canadian economy and Canadian business that he decided to buy his vehicle from an American auto dealer...
Kind of reminds me of when a former Prez of the local Chamber of Commerce took it upon himself to buy a boat from a Sudbury business...

That DaPrat dude is a piece of work, ain't he? And if indeed he did buy a car from an American company, it's just another TYPICAL example of union HYPOCRISY - do as we say, not as we do.
flyhawk25 11/3/2009 2:09:06 PM Report

Read both responses to the Mayor's letter.
Both are the Presidents of large local unions.
That's where the similarities end.
One is thoughtful and conciliatory in tone.
The other is abrasive and confrontational.
For all those people who paint unions with a single brush - take note.
I would not want DaPrat negotiating my kids' allowance. If his is the mindset of our local workers get ready for some big confrontations.

"was myself pondering questions of liability on Sunday as I watched the tree-cutters trying to tow a wheel-locked piece of heavy equipment down Queen Street with a pickup truck and a length of one-inch rope."

Nice Spin Dave!!! But don't confuse (or try to spin) liabilities associated with the practises of the company hired to cut down the trees, and the trees themselves.

And on the 1" rope, I have 1/2" climbing ropes that could easily hold a pick up truck off the side of a cliff.

David Helwig 11/3/2009 3:28:16 PM Report

To Koss:

I am basically dubious of the wisdom of towing wheel-locked heavy machinery down a provincial highway in a built-up area using a wheel-spinning pickup truck and a one-inch rope.

That's all.

"...in true management fashion, chooses to pontificate, and blame both sides equally."

No, Mike. If it were "in true management fashion," he would have only blamed the union.

That he was willing to apportion blame equally suggests, to me, that such issues are rarely -- if ever -- that black-and-white.
mvnnth 11/3/2009 4:18:05 PM Report

I have to admit I am seriously out of step with the majority opinion on here with regard to the cutting down of healthy trees for no reason. I am not a "tree hugger" by any stretch but I fail to see the wisdom in cutting down a tree because it inconveniently drops some leaves on the lawn or the sap stains the siding. A healthy tree should be allowed to stand unless it poses a unacceptable risk and any means to mitigate that risk is deemed impractical. That's why we pay property insurance premiums.

We have also seen a big grey coloured wolf a few times as well. No doubt the vast majority of your friends are opposed to the gun registry. However, there are likely as many, and possible more, who are supportive of its purpose, although not so its implementation and cost.

As well, despite its drawbacks, the registry has the support of law enforcement officials.

The long gun registry serves no purpose. Many people, including Tony Martin, seem to be unable to make the distinction between licensing and registration. The bill does not change the requirement for licensing. Licensing requires the safety training, testing, background check, spousal approval, employment history, financial status check, etc. Police would still know who has a firearms license. The registry is nothing but a shopping list for the 300+ hackers who have accessed it.

Of course the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police supports the registry. The CACP received money to fund its activities from a company called CGI. CGI just happened to be the company that supplied the computer system that is used by the Firearms Centre. Follow the money, boys.

Uncle fester...I disagree. Many of us complained about what happened to those workers at Northern Breweries but with no law in place - they had little recourse.
So now Mr.Martin and his colleagues want to do something to protect workers whose companies go bankrupt.

It must drive many people nuts that Tony Martin actually is consistent in his philosophy.
The guy is pro-life. All life.
He has not changed that position as long as I've known him - which is a long time.
I have disagreed with him many times. I have confronted him on issues and not voted for him.
I was so upset over Rae Days that I left him off my Christmas card list.
I disagree with his position on the gun registry issue.
But I understand it.
We are not dealing with one of the great political mavens of this century here. I think that the guy does not have an ulterior bone in his body.
I will tell him straight up that I don't agree. Then I will vote for him because he is an honest, humble guy with what I believe to be a consistent philosophy.
He probably will never get my kid a job in Ottawa or my brother in law a tax break on his business.
So what.
He is honest.
He cares about people.
He is representing me in Ottawa and I can live with that.
Think about that - a simple honest guy who follows his conscience.
..and he keeps getting elected...

Fly
If he follows his conscience how come he voted for Gay marriages? Catholics do not believe in that.
Pro life
Abortion is none of his business. Abortion is between a woman and her doctor. It is a nothing issue. Except Catholics don't believe in it.
Gun registry others in his party voted to rescind it. Tony voted the way Jack Layton told him to.
The guy needs to get a mind of his own and vote the way the majority of his bosses want( the tax payers) who work to send money to Ottawa to cover his wages.
Honest quiet guy is he. For the money and benefits he receives it is about time he started to make some noise.
It is about time he did what people want not what Jack wants.
I voted NDP for many many years until Bob Rae.So I know a little bit about the Party or at least how it used to be.

Probably because he followed his own individual conscience! DUH!
Wife, for a while I thought you were a plant put into this website as a Homer Simpson character. I'm still not totally convinced otherwise.

I've got a message for the lady with the sick kid in the grocery store yesterday. If your kid has the swine flu, and he's too sick to go to school, DON'T TAKE HIM SHOPPING WITH YOU!!!! My wife and I got the heebie-jeebies watching him cough and honk all over the store! Get some common sense!
BIG BROTHER 11/4/2009 9:13:33 PM Report

Hal,

What aisle is that in?

Wife:
He voted his conscience, not the Pope's. It was the same with the gun registry. It was a free vote. None of the leaders told their people how to vote. Martin voted his conscience.
Where do you come up with this stuff?

...clean-up in the pork products aisle.

Tony probably looked at the paycheque in one hand (signed by Jack) and looked at the voters in the other and voted his bank account.

Yesterday someone asked about the series of solar panels at the bottom of the Mile Hill. They are beams that will set off a warning light if a large animal crosses through the beam. It is meant to warn drivers of deer and moose. The solar panels will power the beams. Take a good look next time and you will see the laser beam receivers/transmitters mounted on the pole. The caution lights should be mounted soon. Only time will tell if they will help to reduce collisions with animals.

No need to elaborate shakespeare as you understood exactly what my message was.
