Slow down: In case you didn't notice, Sault Police are busting stunt drivers

The driver a Dodge Ram was clocked at 113 km/h on Black Road, the sixth person in less than a month to be charged with stunt driving by Sault Ste. Marie traffic cops

Sault Police have charged another motorist with stunt driving — the sixth in the past month.

This time, the driver was behind the wheel of a Dodge Ram clocked at 113 km/h on Black Road, where the posted speed limit is 60 km/h.

A 43-year-old was charged with stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act. Because it is not a Criminal Code offence, police are not releasing the person’s name.

Like everyone charged with stunt driving, this person faces an automatic 30-day driver’s licence suspension and had their vehicle towed and impounded for 14 days, at their expense.

The driver is scheduled to appear in Provincial Offences Court, where penalties could include a fine of up to $10,000, a mandatory driver’s licence suspension of 1 to 3 years, and/or a custodial jail sentence not exceeding 6 months.

If found guilty, the driver will also face increased costs for high-risk insurance, six (6) demerit points, and must attend a mandatory driver improvement course.

“Driving is a privilege and violating the law can result in you losing that privilege,” says a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, echoing other releases over the past month. “Sault Police hope this incident will raise awareness of the potential dangers and personal and financial consequences of stunt driving.”

Over the past month, Sault Police have also laid stunt driving charges on March 21, March 25, April 5, April 8 and April 16.
