A standoff Tuesday night in Manitou Park led to the arrest of a 34-year-old murder suspect wanted by the Peterborough Police Service.

Sault police provided more details today about a two-hour standoff on Farquhar Street involving a man who barricaded himself inside a home.

It turns out the late-night call was a joint operation with Peterborough police, who were pursuing a man wanted for second-degree murder in connection with a July 2022 homicide in that community.

Eduardo Silva, 34, was taken into custody at approximately 11 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Along with second-degree murder, Silva is charged with:

  • Discharging Firearm with Intent
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order X2
  • Using Firearm in Commission of Offence
  • Possession of Firearm or Contrary to Prohibition Order

The accused was remanded into custody following a bail hearing.

The investigation is ongoing in Sault Ste. Marie, and further charges are pending. Police say more information will be released when it becomes available.

“I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to our team of investigators and to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service for their roles in bringing Silva into custody,” said Chief Stuart Betts of the Peterborough Police Service, in a news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “The distance between where Silva is accused of committing his crime and where he was ultimately arrested highlights the fact that crimes and those who commit them transcend regional borders and agencies. We have become increasingly reliant on the cooperation of other agencies to bring a conclusion to such complex investigations that threaten the safety in our communities.”

Sault Police Chief Hugh Stevenson said the arrest is “a testament to the quality police work and professionalism of our members and has made our service proud.”

“We’d also like to thank Peterborough Police Service for their hard work and persistence in this case,” Stevenson continued. “Together, we were able to get a violent offender off the streets and into custody.”

None of the allegations against Silva have been tested in court and he is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
