Dutch treat: Algoma U welcomes cohort from the Netherlands

Visitors check out Whitefish Island, Indigenous art and cultural workshops, and a Soo Greyhounds playoff game

The Algoma University International Affairs Office recently welcomed a group of students from Utrecht University in the Netherlands to the Sault Ste. Marie campus for an in-person cultural exchange.

Dr. Nancy Mykoff of Utrecht University was joined by nine students to meet in-person with Dr. Laura Wyper.

In a news release, Algoma said the two professors have been jointly working on the course Community Economic and Social Development: Special Topics II Community-Based Arts, Archives, and Activism through Collaborative Online International Learning Virtual Exchange.

During the week-long visit, the group completed a number of activities and workshops relating to Indigenous peoples, residential schools in Canada, the impacts of colonization globally, community-based arts and Indigenous activism, Algoma said.

The group was able to connect with the community in Sault Ste. Marie through a cultural education walk on Whitefish Island, Indigenous art and cultural workshops, and a Soo Greyhounds playoff game.

“In our collaborative efforts with Utrecht University, we've witnessed the transformative power of cross-cultural engagement in fostering understanding and empathy among students from diverse backgrounds,” said Dr. Wyper.

“Through initiatives like the Community Economic and Social Development course, we aim to cultivate a deeper appreciation for Indigenous perspectives and empower students to become advocates for social justice on a global scale.”

Algoma said it is dedicated to fostering cross-cultural learning through vibrant exchange programs, embracing diversity and promoting understanding among students from different backgrounds.

By offering immersive experiences in diverse cultural settings, Algoma enriches its community and prepares students to thrive in a globally interconnected world, the university said.
